Video obtained by News 12 shows the white truck hitting Chacho Sanchez and then continuing down the street. Police say the 49-year-old driver only returned to the scene after they got in touch with him and told him what happened.

Police say 29-year-old Jenny Maribel Chacho Sanchez was killed just before 8:30 a.m. Friday, after she was hit by a box truck turning left from Saint Nicholas Street in Bushwick on to Gates Avenue.

"Out of no reason, we saw many people gathering around, and many people right there - some of them were crying," remembered Natalia Caballero, who lives in the area, and was with her family shortly after it happened.

Video obtained by News 12 shows the white truck hitting Chacho Sanchez and then continuing down the street. Police say the 49-year-old driver only returned to the scene after they got in touch with him and told him what happened.

"(Other people) said the family came here, and she had a six-year-old daughter, and she basically dropped her daughter off, and she basically was going to work," said Caballero, of Chacho Sanchez.

She lived just over a block away from where she was killed.

People stopping by a growing memorial at the spot Saturday say she was originally from Ecuador, and had only lived in the neighborhood for a few months, although she had been in the country longer.

Many said they did not know her personally, but still felt shaken by her death.

"It's very sad," said Santiago Oleas, who lives near the intersection. "I suppose maybe I met her at some point."

City data shows the stretch of St. Nicholas Street where the crash happened has averaged around one crash and one injury a month since the start of 2025.

"About 85 percent of drivers in this neighborhood is ok, but another 15, they drive fast," said Jimmy Chavez, who lives down the block.

However, this is the first time someone has lost their life there since at least 2011, when the numbers started being listed.

"I always tell people to be careful crossing around here because the busses - they're in the way, and people can't see to cross the streets," said Adrian Soto, who lived up the block.

"It's kind of one of those blind spots, I think is what causes situations like unfortunately like what happened to her," agreed David Kessler, who also lived in the area.

Police say so far, the driver of the truck has not been arrested or charged with anything.
